Digestive diseases have various types of causes. For some people, these are genetic, environmental, or unknown reasons. There are some ways to improve your lifestyle and diet to prevent them or make them less noticeable.

There are some easy things to consider while thinking about our gastrointestinal health:

  • some problems have uncomplicated solutions; for example - if you struggle with heartburn, consider avoiding highly acidic foods, eating big meals, or even try not to eat close to your bedtime
  • dealing with constipation and bloating might be difficult - try to improve your digestion and bowel movements by adding to your diet fiber-rich foods accompanied with fruits and vegetables (always remember to wash them to remove bacteria)
  • consider quitting smoking because it can make digestive problems worse
  • drinking alcohol (excessive) can lead to cirrhosis or cancers of the stomach, liver, pancreas, and colon

Several studies pointed out that obesity and an unhealthy diet can influence the incidence of gastric cancer.

Who especially should get screened?

First of all, you should consider seeing a gastroenterologist when you are experiencing some of the symptoms listed here:

  • rectal bleeding
  • excessive gas or belching
  • loss of appetite or weight
  • abdominal pain or bloating
  • dark urine
  • acid reflux

These are only some of the symptoms we might experience regarding our gastrointestinal health. But we should be aware of them, and most importantly - we should not disregard them.

Gastrointestinal diseases prevention

Are you 50 or older? At this time, you should start to be more than aware of your gastrointestinal tract. Patients should see a specialist for a screening colonoscopy every ten years to detect any possible abnormality and colon cancer.

Depending on your family history and medical interview, your doctor may advise you to check your colon more frequently or to start checking it earlier than suggested.
