Artificial Intelligence systems are developing rapidly in many fields - gastroenterology is not an exception. Endoscopy procedures are often the go-to methods of examination and diagnostics of the GI tract. Rising cases of gastrointestinal problems will drive the demand for fast, safe, and reliable interpretation methods. What will be the role of AI in gastroenterology in the nearest future?

Understanding AI

Artificial intelligence mimics human cognitive functions such as learning and problem-solving. Due to distractions and fatigue, the human mind is prone to making mistakes during prolonged mental effort. That's why AI can compensate for the shortcomings of the human brain in many fields and disciplines - it can facilitate and improve human work.

Gastrointestinal tract imaging

During First Global Artificial Intelligence in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Summit, a consensus was made that AI will be particularly relevant in endoscopy and image interpretation. Moreover, estimations show there are many cases of missed detection of a lesion because of low-quality endoscopy. We can reduce those statistics by using Artificial Intelligence for lesion analysis and detection. Finding gastrointestinal bleeding, especially during the wireless capsule endoscopy procedure, can also be assisted by AI. Advanced algorithms have the potential to better predict and then treat gastroenterological patients.

AI in gastroenterology - does it make a difference?

Using Artificial Intelligence in gastroenterology can make a huge difference for both clinicians and patients, resulting in improving the availability of healthcare services. For clinicians, the benefits include rapid identification of abnormalities and filtering off easy cases. Not only does this save time and help with the workload, but also, can help younger doctors or doctors not specialized in gastroenterology. With AI assistance, they can often identify findings that are non-obvious to junior staff or that are difficult to pinpoint by doctors outside gastroenterology. AI can help greatly ease the workload of the medical staff, improving the patient's care. Patients could also benefit from faster diagnosis and earlier disease detection. As a result, they are successfully treated early on, and diagnostic tests may be more widely available.
